Derek Cyr, Atholville, NB
Derek is without a doubt a role model for Campbellton residents, but especially for teenagers who are also
struggling with their weight.
He is 14 years old and is in the process of changing his life so he can feel better in his own skin. Last March I had a chat with Derek about his weight. He weighed 298 pounds and it was preventing him from focusing during the first 10 to 20 minutes of his science class. He had to leave class to go have a drink, catch his breath and wipe the sweat off his face after having climbed the stairs leading to his classroom. On many occasions I overheard some of the students making remarks about Derek and his weight.
In light of this, I decided to do something and thought Mr. Junior Michaud, of Simply For Life, could help me. I explained the situation and he encouraged me by offering Derek a free month of consultations. I mentioned the offer to Derek and immediately he was on board, saying he couldn’t wait to improve his quality of life.
The first month passed and Derek lost 10 pounds. Mr. Michaud was so pleased with Derek’s progress that he offered to keep Derek on the SFL program, free of charge, as long as he continued to follow the program. Derek has now lost a total of 42 pounds and wants to reach the 50 pound mark before the end of the school year. His ultimate goal is to weigh 200 pounds but he especially wants to be in good shape. To encourage him a little bit more, his school has offered him 3$ per pound lost in order to buy new clothes. And to add to that, Simply For Life Campbellton will double the amount of money given to him.
Good nutrition is the key to success and it’s obvious that the combination of physical activity coupled with nutrition creates amazing results. Mr. Dwayne Ward, of the MMA club “The Vault” in Campbellton, also took part in the project by offering Derek and a friend a 4-month pass, which will help Derek stay motivated with physical activity.
This wonderful young man has made it clear that this is only the beginning in the pursuit of a bigger dream. I am so proud to share his story with you and to emphasize the positive impact Derek has had on everyone who has heard or been part of his story. I know that as I continue to teach I will never forget this special young man. I know that he will have a positive impact on many more people, young and old, as I can already say he has changed my views on life.
Great job Derek, I am so proud of you. I hope to one day attend your first MMA fight. Your teacher who believes in you and who appreciates you very much. - Mrs. Véro
Testimony from Junior Michaud from Simply for Life Campbellton
Mrs. Véronique’s email discussing her concern for Derek really touched me. Having myself been a victim of comments, at his age, because of my weight, instantly made me want to help him. After our first meeting, we had an instant connection and I couldn’t wait to get him started on the SFL program. Derek had a rather special food routine; we had to find a way of changing his eating habits without completely overhauling his routine. Together, we found a way to move forward that would work for him and our weekly meetings really helped him stay on track. Derek is a young man with an incredible drive and is determined to succeed, which in my opinion has been the key to his progress so far. He lost 42 pounds since February 19th and continues to do well as he gets closer to reaching his goal.
My intent with Derek is to make him realize the importance of healthy food “for Life” and to show him how to maintain his weight, while still enjoying some of his favourite treats on occasion. I thank Mrs. Véronique for giving me the opportunity and I applaud Versant Nord School for their involvement. - Junior Michaud
